STAMFORD, NY 12167
(3 miles North of Hobart via State Rt. 10 to State Rt. 23)
The Stamford area was well known at the turn of the past century as a very popular hotel & resort mecca. At one point, over two dozen grand hotels, inns and boarding houses dotted the countryside.

The area was visited by farmers and trappers in the 18th century. The village was incorporated in 1870. By the early part of the 20th century Stamford reached its peak as a tourist area, mostly aided by the arrival of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad from Kingston in 1872. (Passenger service lasted until 1954 and freight service until 1976.
With the physical removal of the railroad line, the Village of Stamford is now a stop on the 26.5 mile Catskill Scenic Trail and home of the Headwaters Trails (a series of hiking trails along the beginning waters which creates the West Branch of the Delaware River.
There are approximately thirty miles of multi-use trails in the Bald Mountain Recreation Area that are open to the public due to the generous cooperation of several landowners. The trails offer a variety of experiences for all levels of walking, running, hiking, mountain biking, making the trails an all-season attraction. Equestrians, trail runners, cross-country skiers and snowshoers are all welcome.
Also located in Stamford is Mount Utsayantha, which includes an observatory and a viewing tower. It is a popular destination for hang-gliding enthusiasts.
